Pastels
Pastels have always been a favorite of mine. Even before the marvelous papers of today, I worked to paint with the sticks of pigment that transferred their hues onto the textures of 'pastel' paper. Although I have tried wearing cotton gloves and latex gloves, pastel gets all over hands, under nails, and on clothes.
Presently there are sanded papers in various degrees of smooth and rough. They grab the color and grab another one on top. They brush off, or wash off. They take an underpainting in watercolor or acrylic and still grab the pastel dust on top of that. Once finished, a pastel must be handled with exquisite care. Moving it too much will dislodge the color. Smudging can take away an hour of work. So a pastel has to get "under glass" and framed ASAP.
But then, its wonderful softness is preserved. It's thickness is saved. I just love it.

Deep Purple
I always wanted to go to Holland to see the tulips. And last year, we did. It was like being bathed in glorious dyes. We visited Keukenhof Gardens, a formal presentation of tulips that was marvelously designed. I was captivated with the depth of this purple and took my photo from a fairly large distance. When I got home and looked closely, I found these were not even tulips. I still love them. Like grape juice.
